Eye Protection Explained: Matching the Lens to the Hazard

Eye injuries are one of the most common workplace injuries in Australia, and also one of the easiest to prevent. The catch is that "safety glasses" isn't one product. What stops a flying particle won't stop a chemical splash, and what stops UV won't stop welding flash. Picking the right lens for the actual hazard is the whole job.

Clear ≠ Safe

A clear lens only tells you it's not tinted. It says nothing about impact rating, chemical resistance or fog control. Check the hazard match, not just the colour.

OTG Isn't a Nice-to-Have

If your team wears prescription glasses, "over the glasses" (OTG) frames or a proper prescription insert stop the constant swap-out that leads to gear being left off altogether.

The Hazards: Matching the Lens to the Job

General Purpose / Impact

Covers flying debris, dust and general workshop or site risk. This is the baseline for most trades, and the category most people default to even when the job actually calls for something more specific.

Chemical Splash

A standard frame doesn't seal against liquid. Chemical splash protection needs a wraparound or goggle-style seal that stops splash from getting in around the edges, not just from the front.

Welding and Radiant Heat / IR

Arc, gas welding and other radiant heat sources call for shaded lenses matched to the process, and laser work needs eyewear rated to the specific wavelength involved. We've covered this in detail in our Welding PPE guide, since it's a big enough topic on its own.

Face Shields

A face shield protects the whole face from splash, sparks or debris, but it isn't a substitute for safety glasses underneath. Most standards and most sites require both together, since a shield alone doesn't seal around the eyes.

Comfort and Fit: The Features That Decide Whether It Gets Worn

  • Anti-fog coating: the single biggest reason people push glasses up on their head instead of wearing them. Worth paying for if the job involves heat, humidity or a respirator underneath.
  • UV protection: relevant for any outdoor or site work, not just summer. UV exposure is cumulative.
  • Polarised lenses: cuts glare off wet surfaces, metal and glass. Useful outdoors, less useful in low light.
  • Reading / bifocal lenses: built-in reading magnification for close detail work, so people aren't lifting glasses off to read a label or a gauge.
  • OTG (over the glasses): a wider frame designed to fit over prescription glasses without gapping at the sides.

The right feature set is often what determines whether the gear actually stays on, not the base lens itself.


PPE Is the Last Layer, Not the First

Eye protection is the last line of defence, not the first. Isolating the hazard, guarding machinery, using splash shields on equipment and good housekeeping around debris all do more work than the glasses themselves. Across Australia, the primary duty falls on the employer to eliminate or reduce risks so far as is reasonably practicable, based on a proper risk assessment of the tasks involved. PPE complements that work. It doesn't replace it.

How to Choose Well

  • Match the category to the actual hazard, not the trade in general. A general-purpose lens on a chemical-handling task is a common and avoidable gap.
  • Look for the AS/NZS 1337 mark on the box. It's the quickest quality check for eye protection sold in Australia.
  • Replace scratched or pitted lenses. Reduced visibility is its own hazard.
  • If your team wears prescription glasses, budget for OTG frames or inserts rather than hoping people double up.
